week 7 assignment 2
We just can’t seem to put down the game bananagrams! I can sit with my family playing bananagrams day in and day out. Bananagrams is a game that is fun for all ages and is easy to play.
What makes this game so much fun? We are likely intrinsically motivated, which means we are motivated by the inherent value in playing the game, namely that it makes us smarter and it brings us closer together as a family. The game is similar to scrabble and is compact so is a great travel game. We are also extrinsically motivated, meaning that we are motivated not by something inherent in the game, but by a byproduct of the game, namely by the pride and bragging rights we gain by winning. It's a chance to show off our skill at making words and laugh at the words we can produce. We can also be motivated by achievement motivation, which is when we want to show that we can perform better than others. The first player to use up is or her letters is declared the winner.
Games by their nature are engaging and are a great tool to use in the classroom. Bananagrams is a great game which can test spelling and reading. It is also a valuable tool for sharpening students' minds and challenging them to discover words with three or more letters. Teachers can also adapt the game to have students choose words within a certain theme. Students can learn through the process of playing the game. They can gain a variety of new skills through playing the game. Games can help grab student’s attention, instead of frontal teaching which at times can be very hard.
Keller’s ARCS model attempts to identify the necessary parts of motivation. It includes gaining attention, establishing relevance, building confidence, and generating satisfaction. The six C’s of motivation are great ways to increase motivation. They are choice, challenge, control, collaboration, constructive meaning, and consequence. These are all components of the game bananagrams and therefore it has won many gaming awards. When we give a choice to our students we are allowing them to pursue their personal interest and this can help keep them intrinsically motivated. When we give just a little bit of challenge to our students we can help keep them focused and motivated. Control helps by giving the students the power to make decisions and to be independent. Collaboration allows students to inspire one another. Constructive meaning is if the students find the material they are learning valuable they will stay motivated and continue to learn. And finally consequences are achieved by having the reward of their project hung up on the wall they can stay motivated. If we have our students motivated to learn they will surely succeed!
